"I love the Dream English Touch and Say Phonics Program!" -Kia B., USA

Matt's Note: I recommend using the Touch and Say phonics as part of an overall Phonics and reading program. Using phonics chants, reading often to children, and singing the ABC song often will all help your students on their way to becoming great readers! See below for more Phonics Materials from Dream English.

    What is Phonics?
Phonics is defined as a way of teaching reading and spelling that stresses symbol-sound relationships, used especially in beginning instruction. I use phonics practice with my students from 2 years old all the way to adults. I learned how to read in the U.S.A with phonics, so I really believe it can give a solid foundation for beginning readers. For example, A sounds like "aaa" in the word apple, which starts with the "aaa" sound. A-aaa-apple! Without the use of phonics, children would have to memorize every word they come across in order to read.

Think of phonics as the building blocks of reading. According to Wiley Blevins in his excellent book Phonics from A to Z: A Practical Guide(Published by Scholastic), "Studies show that half of all English words can be spelled with phonics rules that relate one letter to one sound." That's amazing! Think of the world of reading opportunities you are opening for your students by teaching them phonics!

This page is a collection of my teaching ideas and materials for teaching phonics, all for free download. You will find phonics chants, ABC Songs, phonics worksheets, and more! All free to use to help your children and students to learn how to read. This page is new in 2009, and I will be adding a lot to this page, so please check back often.

Practice writing the letters of the alphabet and draw a picture that starts with that letter. I recommend this for younger students. It can be a fun exercise to pick the first letter of your students name and start from there, or just start from the letter A. You can either bring in a real object that starts with the letter, or use a book or flashcard as an example. Click on the letter to open the page to view and print the file:
